George Washington Night

While we were with my mom during Christmas she gave me a bunch of things to do a "Colonial Days" with the kids. We had a George Washington book that the kids were familiar with and so we called it George Washington Night (we waited till dad came home from work so we could all do it together.) We had a really fun time, thanks grandma for all the neat things and fun ideas!

First we read the book, "George Washington & the General's Dog" by Frank Murphy. Then we dressed up in cute & authentic clothing provided by Grandma.

Spencer really want to be someone too. The first name I thought of was Peter. So the family tree for our George Washington Night is: Peter is George's brother. And just to make sure Ruth wasn't left out she was Jane, Peter's wife.

Grandma gave the boys cork guns.

All the boys had fun with these! They reenacted the battle between George and General William Howe (Kurt).

Emma Lynn received a fan with a set of watercolors to paint it with. So perfect!

Next we played 9 pin bowling (well our version was actually 7 pin bowling because that's how many pins we could find in our toy room!)

We made tops out of cardboard and skewers.

To finish off the night we lit a candle to read scriptures by and ate apple juice, cheese & crackers.

{I promise the lights were off when I took this picture - I love my rebel!}

Tomorrow we will watch the movie grandma gave us, "Felicity, An American Girl" with popcorn.

It was fun to explain that these were some of the activities that George Washington did when he was alive. It was a great way to learn and have fun as a family. That got the kid's creative juices flowing for activities to put into our "Family Activity Jar." Austin wants to do an Abraham Lincoln & Joseph Smith night. :D

When asked their favorite part:
Austin - reading scriptures by candle light (and later added his cork gun.)
Emma Lynn - eating cheese & crackers and painting the fan.
Spencer - making tops

Thanks Grandma we had a wonderful time!
