I did my first coupon shopping experience this morning. Luckily it was very fast and painless. My SIL Marti is quite obsessed with coupon shopping and rightly so b/c she has found a ton of killer deals and even knows how to make money shopping. Pretty awesome! It requires a lot of time to do though. That is exactly why I haven't jumped into the coupon craze.
But Marti told me about some items you could get through rebates at Rite Aid. The store had all the rebate items together on one shelf (so nice, thank you rite aid!) So when the checks come in all the items I brought today will be free plus I had 2 $5 off coupons therefore making $10.
I could get use to this. As long as its not too time consuming I can do it!

Weaned amongst other things
8 days ago I let Rooster pick out a new sippy cup from Wal-Mart. She picked a Minnie Mouse 2 pack (it was also the closest one within her reach.) We made a big deal out of these cups and she was so proud of them.
7 days ago I threw away all the bottles in our house. I was determined to be firm this time, we were going to succeed at this no matter what!
That was also the same day she started throwing up. This was followed by diarrhea, fever, coughing, runny nose and lots more vomiting. She was so miserable! I have never had a kid have every symptom at once. Monday and Tuesday morning she spent with Grandma Cindy while I taught preschool. She still wasn't getting better so Tuesday we set off for the Dr. as soon as I picked her up. Things were complicated in the fact that her pediatrician wasn't taking any patients until Thursday. AHHH! She still wasn't keeping anything down so I didn't want to wait that long. We opted for the walk-in clinic in Fruitland. The waiting room....uummm...that is germ infested bacteria breeding playground. It was almost 3 hours before we saw the Dr. The ear infections were back (probably never went away, just got worse) and pneumonia. They wanted to do x-rays but Ruth was completely fried by this point. It would have been next to impossible to get her to be still for the x-ray. They had to check her oxygen levels again the next day so I suggested we do the x-rays then (if they were still needed.) So we filled her prescriptions (another hour wait) and headed home.
I rescheduled Wednesday's preschool class for Friday and canceled volunteering in Austin's class therefore freeing my schedule to spend another day in the germ pool. Emma played at Jacqlyn's both days which was nice for both of us. Spencer came down with a high fever Tuesday night so Wednesday when they were rechecking Ruth I asked them to look at him real quick. Ear infections. He has been doing great since we got him on antibiotics so quick (its nice we caught that one fast!) But Ruth's oxygen levels had improve in 24 hours so we didn't have to do the x-rays (thank you!!!) and are continuing on our current course of treatment. Today was the first real time I saw my rooster back. I MISSED YOU!!!
Amongst all this you are weaned from the bottle! Way to perform under pressure. You are making steps to the big girl world. Always bitter sweet for the mom. But I'm proud of you and so happy you are feeling better!

Our First Friend Sleepover
Last night Emma Lynn had her first sleepover! She spent the afternoon at Jacqlyn's house (while I took Ruth to the Dr.) When I picked her up I asked Jacki if she wanted to spend the night. That was a definite YES! She packed her bag quick and we were on our way.
The girls are such good friends and they were so excited to have a sleepover, it was adorable! I really enjoyed sharing this first with them. I have a feeling there will be many, many more sleepovers to come (especially with Jacki!)

Conference Weekend
I love General Conference. What a feast, rejuvenation, and strengthening!
Kurt worked Saturday so the kids and I were on our own for listening. For the morning session we kept the tradition of popcorn and pop. Everyone had Conference Notebooks and we kept busy coloring, word searching, listening for Bingo words and drawing portraits of the apostles.
Saturday afternoon we pulled out the sleeping bags and pillows for a cozy picnic of pizza and listening. (I'm not sure what it is about conference that inspires our "P" food theme ~ maybe cause conference is PERFECT!)
Ruth got sick Thursday night with the flu (throwing up & diarrhea) and while that got better a cold came on Friday (fever, running nose, cough.) Saturday the flu symptoms came back. So we have cold and flu combined! The poor rooster is so miserable! Kurt took the older 3 in to watch the Sunday morning session at church (another tradition.) We were all together at the house for the afternoon. Ruth even got off my lap and ventured on her own for a few minutes (maybe there's hope that she'll get better!)
I really enjoyed Elder Bednar and Elder Christofferson's talks - I can't wait to dive into them again (and again!) I also really enjoyed the emphasis on the Holy Ghost and personal revelation in the first session.
I made Austin and Emma a bunch of word searches during the course of the weekend. At the very end Emma wanted to make one for me. This is what she made. I love it!
Emma asked, "Is dad going to be a prophet when he gets bigger?"
Austin said that he feels, "more than super good" when he listens to President Monson speak.
Emma: "Are the scriptures very real?"
ME: yes.
Emma: "Then Jesus is VERY real."
ME: Yes!

Family Life
Austin
Austin's favorite song right now is, "I've Got a Feeling" by the Black Eyed Peas. This cracks me up because I think its hilarious that a 1st grader loves the Black Eyed Peas. I really like this song too so I can't blame him. I picked him up from school and the song was on and he busted out singing the chorus. He knew every word. "This my favorite song, mom!"
Thursday night Austin, Emma Lynn and I went over to the Albert's house around 9 pm. The kids watched "Monster vs. Aliens" while Becca and I talked. We didn't leave till after midnight. We all had a great time visiting, they are great friends. On the way over Austin says, "Mom, I know what sex is." Whoa! Just what you want to hear come out of your 1st grader's mouth. But I am grateful for the teaching opportunity that followed because I was able to explain that sex is special and only for people who are married. He was attentive. I am so grateful that he wasn't afraid to talk to me and that I could explain what we believe about the matter. I hate that my 6 year old was exposed to this already. I won't lie, things like this make me think about home school! We will keep strengthening our family with weekly FHE, daily prayer and scripture study, lots of love and hopefully the lines of communication will stay open. I'm hoping for more sex talks (teaching opportunities) in the future...
Emma Lynn
In the week and a half that Emma Lynn has been 5 she has been more hyper and more excitable than the first years of her life combined. It's strange to hear the words, "You need to calm down, take a deep breath, breathe out, relax." come out of my mouth. These are words I say to Austin on a weekly basis but never Emma Lynn. It should be an interesting year. :)
Emma Lynn is such a wonderful helper to me. I would be lost without her in preschool. I can go to bed earlier now because I know Emma Lynn will help me with some of the prep work that use to keep me up all night last year. What a blessing she is! Washing dishes and sweeping without being asked, what a dream! Thank You! She is making it impossible for me to send her to school next year.
She is reading and it's an exciting world for her. Her sight words continue to improve, she has a quick mind. Austin challenged Emma with his spelling words this week. She spelled them all out loud (which I think is harder than writing them out) and got them all right.
She used her birthday money this week. One of her friends was in the store with her trying to get her to buy all kinds of cute, different things but she found a nice easel (chalkboard, white board and roll of paper combo). Once she saw it there was nothing else that could tempt her. She asked Kurt about 28 times to put it together for her last night :) and breezed through chores this morning in order to create all day. I love her passion.
Spencer
Thursday afternoon we drove over to Fruitland for Spencer to try gymnastics. He was a little unsure and didn't want to join the class. He did everything the class did but not with them. I would really like him to have something of his own to be proud and excited about. And I'd like him to have another teacher who isn't his mother! We'll see how next week goes...
But Spencer is doing really well with preschool. He listens well to me and follows instructions. He hasn't had a hard time switching roles from mom to teacher. Like his siblings he is excited and proud of his school work and homework. It has been a great setting for me to see how much he knows. At home he is always the "funny one." And he rarely gives a straight answer so I was unsure of how much he actually knew. But at school he is anxious to be apart of the group and readily shares the information he knows. I didn't give him enough credit! We are currently working on writing his name.
The "new" computer in the preschool room got set up this week. They love it!
Ruth
Ruth is pretty sure she rules the preschool room. She is right there a part of everything in Spencer's class. Going to school at 19 months, crazy! She's just hanging out with mom (and keeping up with the big kids.)
We are currently weaning her from her bottle. I have tried twice before but she just screamed and screamed so I always gave it back (I wanted to SLEEP!) But she has a large rash caused by the bottle and she is 19 months old for crying out loud! It's been a little over 24 hours since we are bottle free and I really think this is the real deal!
Taken last Sunday (Dress from Russia [it was Emma's.]) She was running away from me. Note the cute pigtails and the last bottle picture...
Most days I realize how blessed I am with my family life. What a good life!
